Mouthguards

A mouthguard is a plastic appliance that you can wear over your teeth to protect them from damage. Athletes wear mouthguards to protect their teeth during full contact sports. Mouthguards are worn in full contact sports because they prevent cracking, chipping, tooth loss, or other damage.

At our practice we also offer mouthguards for patients to wear at night while they sleep. Some patients chew or grind their teeth while they are sleeping. This can cause serious damage to the teeth and it can make them susceptible to other tooth problems. Grinding teeth can also lead to a TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder.

Your temporomandibular joints are the joints in your jaw bone. If these joints are used too excessively they can become painful and cause headaches. If you grind your teeth while you sleep, you are much more likely to develop a temporomandibular joint disorder. Wearing a mouthguard at night helps to prevent this problem. You can’t stop yourself from grinding your teeth at night while you are asleep, but our specially designed mouthguards do. With a mouth guard you will be able to avoid developing a temporomandibular joint disorder. You will also be able to protect your teeth. Patients who grind their teeth excessively at night often do not sleep well. With a mouthguard in place, you will be able to sleep more confidently and more comfortably.
